KIA Sorento VS Toyota Fortuner

KIA Motors collaborated with the Yunus Brothers Group to launch KIA Sorento in Pakistan. The newest addition to the stable, has taken the market by storm. The introduction of this midsize SUV means competition for the long-standing symbol of pride Toyota Fortuner.

The South Korean automobile manufacturer aims to challenge players in the Sports Utility Vehicle segment. KIA previously launched the Sportage and Carnival, with Sorento being their latest offering. The SUV comes with compelling features making it a strong local contender to the Fortuner.

Sorento has made its debut in the market with three trim levels; 2.4 AWD, 2.4 FWD and 3.5 FWD, whereas the Fortuner is available in three variants; Sigma4, Fortuner V and Fortuner G. KIA Sorento 3.5 FWD and Toyota Fortuner Sigma4 are two top of the line variants under scrutiny below.

Exterior

The appearance of Sorento is majestic, a combination of bold contours and unique design. The SUV has KIA’s signature Tiger-nose front grille which makes its exterior unique. The car comes in seven bold exterior colors which include: Panthera Metal, Sunset Red, Rich Espresso, Cherry Black, Mercury Blue, Sparkling Silver and Clear White. The noticeable exterior has a Front LED with DRL, Rear LED and Front LED ice cube fog lamps. For additional comfort, the SUV has powered windows.

The Toyota Fortuner has a grand and contemporary outlook, making it a statement of class. The SUV is designed to perform on rugged and urban terrains appealing to both off roaders and inner-city drivers. The Fortuner is available in an extravagant range of colors such as: Attitude Black, Silver Metallic, Graphite, Dark Teal Mica Metallic, Super White, Strong Blue and Phantom Brown.

Engine and Transmission

The Sorento is available in a front-wheel drive configuration. Equipped with a Lambda-II 3.5L MPI engine, producing a maximum output of 206kW at 6300 rpm and 336Nm torque at 5000 rpm. Apart from a high performing engine, the SUV has an 8-Speed Automatic + SportsMatic Transmission. The four Drive Modes; Comfort, Eco, Sport and Smart show improved vehicle capability and  give it an edge over the Fortuner. 

The Fortuner Sigma4 is fitted with a 4-cylinder In-Line Diesel engine that generates 130 kW at 3400 rpm and 450 Nm torque at 1600-2400 rpm. The transmission is a 6-Speed Sequential with Paddle Shifters.

Interior

The refined interior of both cars offers a balance of comfort and extravagance.  Sorento comes with a spacious interior for a comfortable journey. It has a high-grade leather interior with two color options for different trim levels. The 2.4 FWD is available in Saturn Black Leather and the 3.5 FWD comes in Stone Beige. The controls are easy to use and meet modern hi-tech requirements.

On the other hand, Toyota Fortuner has a sophisticated interior that accommodates the traveler. Premium textured leather is used on the arm rests, seats and door panels. The cabin has ample space, with amenities like an interior lamp with sunglass holder, a hot and cool box and smart connections for added convenience.

Safety Features

KIA Sorento puts passenger safety first and is equipped with six Airbags and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Distinctive specifications like Hill Assist Control and Traction Control improve vehicle stability. Another safety feature includes the ISOFix Child Seat Anchors which is an advantage for people travelling with family. Sorento also has an anti-theft feature like an Immobilizer. The SUV comes with standard Central Door Locking which means improved security.

Toyota Fortuner also has immobilizers which is an essential anti-theft mechanism. It also has an Emergency Brake Signal. Other safety functions include Hill Assist Control, Downhill Assist Control and Traction Control improving vehicle stability.

Additional Features

Having convenience features like a 7 Inch infotainment system, wireless charging and powered windows make the Sorento modernly unique. For added comfort it has a cigar lighter, ashtray and seatback folding. The SUV facilitates its users in an ideal manner by having a powered tailgate with memory function. It also has electrically adjustable, retractable and heated outside mirrors.

Toyota Fortuner has similar features like a powered backdoor, a 4.2 Inch Multi Information Display, a smart entry and start system. Other than this, higher ground clearance makes Fortuner more suitable for highly rugged terrains.

Price

KIA Sorento has made its debut in the market, with ample distinctive features and is priced at PKR 8,399,000 (ex-factory), comparatively Toyota Fortuner is priced higher at PKR 9,149,000 (ex-factory).

Conclusively, KIA Sorento would be an ideal choice within the specific price range as it offers greater value for money. Due to its notable features, the competition for other automakers has intensified. After the record breaking success of Sportage and Carnival in the Pakistani automobile market, introduction of the versatile Sorento gives Pakistani consumers a new, reliable option. The wait to see this dynamic vehicle on road is finally over and the growing enthusiasm for SUVs means the future is bright for Sorento.
