The total car sales (including 1000cc, 1300cc, below 1000cc) in January 2021 was 14,543. However, the total car sales number in January 2022 is 16,985. With 17% more car sales, the auto industry has started on a strong note in 2022. This is the latest from Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA).
Latest Sales Numbers
Let’s take a look at the sales numbers of various auto manufacturers, their popular models with their YOY and MOM sales.
Honda Atlas Cars (Pakistan) Ltd. most popular models are City, Civic and BRV. Their latest sales numbers, both YOY and MOM, are as follows.
Honda City and Civic (All Variants)
Honda’s two most popular models – City and Civic sales (YOY) numbers are:

While Honda Pakistan would be more than satisfied with its YOY sales numbers, it would pause before celebrating looking at the latest MOM sales figures. However, these numbers are likely to change with the launch of the upcoming Honda Civic.
Honda BR-V
Honda’s other hottest selling model, BR-V posted the following (YOY) sales numbers:

The overall volume of BR-V sales isn’t much but its YOY and MOM sales percentage numbers are really impressive.
Toyota Indus Sales Numbers
Indus Motor Company Limited (IMC) is the maker of some of the most popular cars in Pakistan, including Corolla, Yaris, Fortuner and Hilux.
Let’s take a look at their YOY and MOM sales numbers.
Toyota Corolla & Yaris (All Variants):

While not outstanding, Toyota Pakistan has posted positive YOY and MOM sales figures.
Toyota Fortuner & Hilux (All Variants)
Toyota’s flagship utility vehicle, Fortuner is a mid-size SUV, which seems to have captured this niche segment in Pakistan. Hilux is a pick-up truck, which is often used as a security vehicle in VIP entourages.
Let’s look at their YOY and MOM sales numbers.

Not only in the sedan category, Toyota Pakistan has posted positive sales numbers in the SUV and pickup truck category as well.
Pak Suzuki Sales Numbers
Suzuki is perhaps the most prominent brand in Pakistan with a variety of models and their variants. Suzuki’s Swift, Cultus, Wagon R, Alto and Bolan are the most commonly seen vehicles on the road. Let’s take a look at their YOY and MOM sales numbers.
Suzuki Alto

Alto’s MOM numbers:

This is not the first time, Alto has taken a big hit as far as its MOM sales figures are concerned. During the entire 2021, these numbers have fluctuated and it seems this year is going to be no different for this sub-compact hatchback.
Suzuki Wagon R
One of the most prominent and popular kei cars in Pakistan, Wagon R is the automobile behind the Uber revolution in Pakistan. Let’s look at its YOY and MOM sales numbers.

Wagon Rs MOM sales numbers have been a cause of concern for Suzuki since July 2021. These numbers had consistently gone up since November 2021 only to now drop again. Let’s see if this trend continues in 2022 as well.
Suzuki Cultus
Cultus’s YOY sales numbers are as follows:

Cultus sales numbers are in the negative for long and the fact that its booking has been halted since September 2021 hasn’t helped. However, the real reason behind this dip could be the consumers interest in the upcoming Suzuki Swift.
Suzuki Bolan
This mini MPV is the main “workhorse” on the roads of Pakistan. It’s YOY and MOM sales numbers are as follows:

Bolan’s YOY sales numbers are the only surprise here. They were positive in 2020-21. It’s MOM sales numbers have been erratic for long. From July 2021 onwards, they have been up and down and not steady. These numbers might begin to change when the latest Bolan is launched.
SUVs
Another automobile segment which has done really well in terms of sales is the compact SUV category. Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and MG ZS and HS are the front contenders in this segment. Unfortunately, PAMA has not provided sales numbers for Kia and MG; however, Hyundai Tucson sales numbers are available.
Hyundai Tucson
This compact SUVs YOY sales numbers are:

Tucson’s MOM sales numbers for the month of Nov ’21 – Dec ’21 were mind blowing. However, they have dropped considerably since then. One reason for this could be the availability of new SUVs in the market and Tucson’s raised prices.
The Biggest Winners
Honda and Toyota have done well both in terms of YOY and MOM sales. While, Honda Civic/City have taken a hit in terms of MOM numbers, they are likely to change as the new Civic arrives in the market.
The Biggest Losers
Suzuki and Hyundai Tucson have experienced the biggest hits.
Rising Auto Sales
As can be seen, the YOY and MOM sales numbers for some are in the positive. This is despite the fact that there are:
- Stringent auto financing requirements from the banks
- Rising financing rates
- Rising automobile prices
What to Expect in Future
With an economy on the rebound, the purchasing power has increased which reflects in the YOY sales numbers. However, the declining MOM sales numbers reflect pre-buying in anticipation of increasing prices.
This trend is likely to continue in the coming months especially as the new cars are introduced in the local market. As many new cars are expected to be launched in 2022, stay tuned to this blog for the latest updates.
