Gas Geyser vs Electric Geyser: Pros and Cons

Gas Geyser vs Electric Geyser: Pros and Cons

With the start of the winter season in the country, many of you will be looking to buy a geyser. If you are doing it after a long time or even for the first time, you will be confused to choose between a gas geyser or an electric geyser. Both options come with their pros and cons and mainly depend upon what suits you the best.

We have gathered some of their advantages and disadvantages to help you choose the best between a gas geyser vs electric geyser.

So, let’s start with the gas geyser.

Gas Geyser

As the name suggests, gas geysers burn Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) to produce heat and transfer it to the water. They provide an instant flow of heated water and supply immediate heating.

There are two types of gas heaters. 1 is Instant gas geysers and the other is storage gas geysers. Instant ones start right after you turn on the hot water tap. There is ignition produced by a battery-powered device that starts the fire. The cold water is directly simultaneously heated and pumped into the pipes.

However, the storage geyser requires a manual pilot to light up the fire in it. This type of geyser comes with large storage capacities. That’s why they are called storage geysers.

Let’s see the advantages and disadvantages of gas geysers now.

Gas Geyser Advantages

  • They heat the water fast (burning natural gas produces way more heat than an electrical heater)
  • In Pakistan, gas is a cheaper energy source than electricity. So, they are cheap in the longer run
  • They will work even if there is an electricity outage
  • Gas geysers are generally cheaper
  • Less maintenance is required

Gas Geyser Disadvantages

Here are the common disadvantages of gas geysers.

  • It is quite hard to install
  • It’s not environment-friendly (Gas geysers cause pollution because they release carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air in the course of burning)
  • Less efficient as they don’t transfer a notable amount of the energy produced to heat the water (energy loss)

Gas Geyser Price in Pakistan

You can buy a gas geyser for a small amount of around Rs.6,000. However, their price can go over Rs.40,000 as well.

Electric Geyser

An electric geyser has a copper coil which is used to convert electricity to heat energy. This heat is then transferred into the water. Just like the gas geysers, these heaters also come in 2 types. Instant Electric Geysers and Storage Electric Geysers.

Let’s see some of the major benefits and drawbacks of electric geysers.

Electric Geyser Advantages

  • Electric geysers generally last longer.
  • You can install electric geysers nearly anywhere in your home
  • Electric geyser is easy to handle
  • Many new geysers come with smart options like wireless control and a lot of modern features.
  • Environment-friendly (No release of carbon monoxide because there is no burning of fuel)

Electric Geyser Disadvantages

  • You need electricity to operate an electric geyser (in power outages, it won’t work)
  • It is costly to operate as electricity is expensive compared to gas in Pakistan
  • Electric geysers are considered a less safe option by some people (due to the involvement of both electricity and water at the same time). A short circuit can lead to possible danger

Electric Geyser Price in Pakistan

You can buy an electric geyser for around Rs.7,000. However, their prices can go over Rs.40,000.

Conclusion

We have explained most of the pros and cons of a gas geyser vs an electric geyser. Now, you are in a better position to decide which one suits your requirements. There is no clear winner but one of the main deciding points is the availability of gas vs electricity in your area in the winter. So, make your decision as per your needs and suitability.
