Urbanization has increased over time, consequently consumer choices have evolved. Hatchbacks have usually been the choice of the masses because of fuel efficiency, trouble-free maintenance and easy movement in highly populated urban areas. Due to their comparative affordability and continuously refined designs, their demand has remained constantly high.

Pak Suzuki Motors is a subsidiary of Suzuki Japan operational in Pakistan since 1982. They launched Suzuki Cultus two decades ago which is popular among Pakistani buyers. Suzuki Cultus is currently available in three variants, AGS, VXR and VXL.

Recently, a South Korean automobile manufacturer Kia Motors collaborated with the Yunus Brothers Group to launch Picanto in Pakistan. Picanto aims to challenge players in the hatchback segment, with Cultus being its strongest competitor. Kia Picanto is available in automatic and manual transmission.

Exterior

Picanto has a sportier, modern and distinctive look with Kia’s signature Tiger-nose front grill. It also has matching colored door handles which adds to the car’s coherent design. The car comes in four sophisticated exterior colors which includes: Clear White, Mercury Blue, Milky Beige and Sparkling Silver.

Suzuki has also given Cultus a facelift by improving its previous design. The car has an aerodynamic shape and a contemporary exterior. Suzuki uses Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) which improves collision protection by use of high tensile materials. Cultus offers a wider range of colors to choose from such as: Sand Beige, Pearl Red, Silky Silver, Cerulean Blue, White, Graphite Gray and Super Pearl Black.

Engine and Transmission

Kia Picanto is equipped with an MPI Inline 3-cylinder (Petrol) engine, produces 68hp at 6200 rpm and 94Nm torque at 3500 rpm. The Suzuki Cultus is also fitted with a 3-cylinder (Petrol) engine that generates 67hp at 6000 rpm and  90 Nm torque at 3500 rpm.

Safety Features

Picanto is equipped with Dual Airbags and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). In addition to this, the car has anti-theft features like an Immobilizer, a Burglar Alarm and a Security System. It also comes with standard Central Door Locking for added utility. Another unique safety feature includes the ISOFix Child Seat Anchors which is an advantage for people travelling with children.

Suzuki Cultus has immobilizers, which is an essential anti-theft mechanism for cars. It also has a High Mount Stop Lamp to avoid rear end collisions. An additional protection feature is Child-proof Rear Door Lock.

Interior

The interior of both cars is designed for comfort, with ample leg room. Additionally, on the inside good quality fabrics have been used. Kia Picanto is also packed with unique convenience features like a Sunglass Holder and a Luggage under seat Box. For added comfort it has Rear Seats with a 60:40 – Split Ratio. With a rear wiper present, cleaning is also easier. It also has electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors. Picanto has an audio system with a call function. The car facilitates its users in an ideal manner.

On the other hand the Suzuki Cultus also has an integrated music system with a USB port and Bluetooth. The car has a high seating position, which improves visibility and the overall driving experience.

Price

Picanto was positively accepted in the market, standing out in the hatchback segment with an abundance of distinctive features. Kia Picanto (Manual) is priced at Rs 1,899,000 (ex-factory) and Suzuki Cultus VXR at Rs 1,780,000 (ex-factory).

In terms of economy, both cars are fuel efficient. Cultus is a city tuned car and so is the Picanto, the structure of these cars ensures easy maneuverability. However, Picanto has a higher ground clearance making it more suitable for slightly rugged landscapes.

Conclusively, Kia Picanto would be an optimal choice within the given price range and with the features it offers. However, in terms of easily accessible repair and maintenance services, Suzuki has higher service levels, maintenance costs are comparatively lower and cheaper spare parts are available making it a better option. Kia Picanto faces great competition because Suzuki Cultus is popular among the masses.
