Someone once asked Ettore Bugatti, the founder of Bugatti company, what he thought of W.O. Bentley, a founder of Bentley company and he said “Mr. Bentley – He builds fast trucks.”
Perhaps what Bugatti meant was that Bentley cars are pristine and luxurious automobiles built like a truck. They must be because the Queen of England has Bentleys in her fleet, not to mention some of the A-list celebrities of Hollywood.
Lately, a certain Bentley Mulsanne caused waves in Pakistan, although for all the wrong reasons and we thought it would be better to shed a light on the car’s interior, engine, safety and comfort features, etc. rather than its perceived “antecedents”.
So, let’s dig in and see what this beautiful beast is all about and for how much.
Brief History
Mulsanne is a 4-door luxury sedan which was in production from 2010 to 2020. The name “Mulsanne” comes from the Mulsanne Straight which passes through the French village of Mulsanne.
The Bentley Mulsanne was unveiled in 2009 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, one of the most prestigious car events in the world held at Pebble Beach, California.
The Mulsanne is the first independently designed car by Bentley Motors in almost 80 years. It is hand built and available in 114 colors.
Bentley Mulsanne Price
This super-luxury sedan starts at a price tag of $316,525 and goes up to $500,000, which roughly translates into Rs.73,908,587 – Rs.116,750,000. This is exclusive of all the taxes that a luxury imported sedan incurs in Pakistan. For reference, in India, the Mulsanne is priced at (INR) Rs.5.56 crores.
Interior & Infotainment
So, what do you get inside of this $316,525 uber-luxurious automobile? Think of the finest materials in the world that can be used inside of a car and you have them in the Mulsanne. Couple this with the luxurious features like massaging seats, and you have a car’s interior like no other.
Like other luxury cars, the Bentley Mulsanne’s interior can also be customized with a variety of color schemes and veneer options. You can choose from 24 leather hides, 9 wood veneers, and 21 carpet colors.
Fitted with a timelessly designed dashboard, the driver and the passengers of the Mulsanne get to enjoy the 8-inch infotainment system. If you’re a music lover then the 14-speaker audio system will transform you to another world.
As mentioned above, the Who is Who of Hollywood also owns the Mulsanne and some of them are the biggest names of the music industry. For them, the Bentley company offers the option of a 20-speaker Naim system, which comes with a 20 GB onboard hard drive.
And as if the Mulsanne in itself wasn’t impressive as is, you can further dazzle your guests with opting for a dual 10.4 inch rear-seat entertainment display screens that can double up as tablets when detached.
Built Like a Truck, Is The Mulsanne Safe?
This will disappoint you a bit – no we are not saying that it isn’t safe. It is safe but the safety features it offers are present in most of the sub-compact and compact SUVs in Pakistan. In short, the safety features offered in the Mulsanne are the same we’ve seen before like:
- Automatic emergency braking
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Forward-collision warning
- Adaptive cruise control (optional)
So you know, the Bentley Mulsanne has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a US government agency responsible for making and enforcing motor vehicle safety standards in the country.
Engine, Power & Fuel Consumption Stats
The Bentley Mulsanne almost weighs 3 Tons. Its length, width and height is 219.5 in, 75.8 in and 60 inches, respectively. By any stretch of imagination, this is a big, heavy car, which is famous for effortless acceleration and agility. So, what drives it?
A powerful twin-turbo 6.75-litre V-8 engine is the answer, which produces 505 hp. This engine is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which ensures agility and smooth acceleration with a top speed of 296 Km/h and 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Despite its enormous size, the Mulsanne is surprisingly wieldy on narrow city streets of London, for example.
For a variety of reasons, the Mulsanne can be compared with the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Mercedes-Maybach S-class. While the latter two are fitted with a 12-cylinder engine, the Mulsanne has an 8 cylinder engine. Its fuel consumption is estimated to be 4.25 Km/l in the city and around 6.8 Km/l on the highway.
For the same comparison, the S650 would do around 5.5 Km/l in the city and the Ghost around 5.1 Km/l in the city.
