The minimum age to obtain a license and drive is set to 18 in Pakistan. A few days back, the chief minister proposed that a 16-year-old would be allowed to drive a motorcycle. But no law has been passed yet related to this proposal. In recent news, the resolution has been moved to the Punjab Assembly to begin with the discussions and considerations.
Resolution Presented To Change the Driving License Age From 18 to 16
As Pakistan’s youth is rapidly increasing, lowering their driving age would result in their economic contributions at an early stage. Know that this proposal was made by the opposition lawmaker, Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood, highlighting that Canada has a driving age of 16, whereas Germany grants a license at 17.
Well, no law has yet been announced on this proposal, and it will only be taken into effect if the Punjab assembly agrees on it. But know that if this proposal gets approved, there would be a need for proper training and learning for youth to ensure their safety on roads. Not just this, no compromise should be made on the traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents or mishaps.
Hefty Fines For Traffic Violators
Talking of traffic rules and regulations, the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Fourth Amendment) Ordinance 2025 was presented in the Punjab assembly. Under the proposed law, the violators are going to experience strict penalties and punishments in the form of license cancellation, heavy fines, jail terms and more.
In conclusion, if the driving license age is changed from 18 to 16, there are chances of increased traffic violations if youth do not follow proper regulations. But for now, let’s see if the Punjab assembly allows the change and creates the new law.
