Types of UK Student Visa

There are majorly 4 types of UK study visas. 

  • 6-month student visa (Standard Visitor Visa)
  • Short-Term Study Visa
  • Student Visa
  • Child Student Visa

1) 6-Month Student Visa UK (Standard Visitor Visa)

A person can visit as a standard visitor for not only study (for courses up to 6 months), but also tourism, business, and other permitted activities. 

Duration to stay: 6 months

Staying longer

You may stay longer by applying for:

  • Short-term study visa
  • Student visa
  • Child student visa

What you cannot do?

  • Can’t do any type of work (paid or unpaid)
  • You cannot claim public funds or benefits
  • Can’t live in the UK for long periods via frequent visits
  • A person cannot marry or be in civil partnership under this visa

Arrival in the UK

You can arrive before your course starts by

  • Up to one week before (in case, your course duration is 6 months or less).

2) UK Short-Term Study Visa (Visa to Study English)

This type of visa can be applied if you want to study the English language (duration between 6-11 months). 

Duration to stay: 11 Months Max (or length of your course + 30 days and not exceeding 11 months accumulatively)

What you cannot do?

  • You can’t study any other course or change it while you are in the UK
  • Studying in state-funded schools is prohibited
  • Work (paid or unpaid) or carrying out business is prohibited in this type of visa.
  • Can’t extend the visa
  • Can’t bring family or dependents
  • You cannot apply for most of the public fund benefits

3) UK Student Visa

A person (16 years old or more) can apply for this type of UK study visa from Pakistan. The following are some important terms.

  • A licensed student sponsor must offer you a place on a course
  • You should have money to support yourself and pay for the course. The amount can vary depending upon various circumstances
  • English speaking, reading, writing, and understanding is essential
  • If your age is 16 or 17, you’ll need to show consent from your parents (evidence needed when applying)
  • The earliest you can apply for a UK study visa from Pakistan is 6 months before the course starts

Duration to stay (18 years old or more): 

Degree level course: Up to 5 years (Usually)

Below degree level course: Up to 2 years (Usually)

Staying longer

You may stay longer by:

  • Extending your visa (depending upon eligibility). E.g to continue your studies
  • Switching to a Student Visa from another visa (only if you are already in the UK)
  • Switching to Graduate Visa (stay for at least 2 years after successful completion of your course)

Arrival in the UK

You can arrive before your course starts by

  • Up to one week before (in case, your course duration is 6 months or less).
  • Up to one month before (in case, your course duration is more than 6 months).

*Don’t try to travel to the UK before the visa starts (start date on visa) regardless of your course starting date.

What you cannot do?

  • Can’t claim benefits (public funds) and pensions
  • You cannot work in certain jobs. e.g. as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
  • You are not allowed to be self-employed
  • Can’t study at a local authority-funded school / maintained school or an academy

4) Child Student Visa UK

A person aged between 4-17 years can apply for this visa if he/she wants to study in an independent school. 

It is essential to:

  • Have an offer (unconditional) of a course at an independent school
  • Prove that you have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself
  • Consent of parents or guardians is essential and you need to prove it as well
  • You can apply for the UK child student visa 6 months (max) before the course starts

Duration to stay (Under 16 years of age):

  • Course duration up to 6 years 
  • 4 months afterwards

Duration to stay (16-17 years of age):

  • Course duration up to 3 years
  • 4 months afterwards

Staying longer

You may stay longer by:

  • Extending your visa (depending upon eligibility). E.g to continue your studies
  • Switching to a Child Student Visa from another visa (only if you are already in the UK)

What you cannot do?

  • Can’t study at a local authority-funded school / maintained school or an academy
  • You cannot study further or in a higher education institution
  • Can’t get public funds or benefits
  • You are not allowed to get a full-time permanent job or be self-employed
  • Can’t work as a professional athlete or entertainer
  • You are not allowed to apply for settlement
  • Bringing family members (‘dependants’) is prohibited in this visa type. Your parents will have to apply for a Parent of a Child Student visa

UK Study Visa Requirements

There are specific UK student visa requirements for every type of study visa. Let’s see the requirements for all types of UK student visa from Pakistan.

1) UK 6-Month Student Visa Requirements (UK Standard Visitor Visa)

Eligibility Requirements

  • A valid passport (must be valid for the entire duration of your stay)
  • You must show that you will leave the UK after completion of your course or at the end of your visit
  • During the trip, you should be able to support yourself as well as your dependents (or you have funding from someone else for this purpose) 
  • You can pay for the return journey (or have someone else who can pay for you)
  • You don’t wish to live in the UK for a long period (make the UK your main home) or visit frequently or successively in this regard

Information Required:

  • The starting and ending dates (as per your planning) for your travel to the UK
  • The place of stay during your visit
  • Your estimation of trip costs
  • Your current address (home) and for how long you are living there
  • The names and date of birth of your parents (if known)
  • Your annual earnings (if you earn)
  • List out details of any criminal, civil, or immigration offenses committed by you.

Other details that you may have to provide:

  • Your travel history details (past 10 years)
  • The address and phone number of your employer
  • Date of birth, passport number, and name of your partner
  • If anyone is paying for your trip, provide his/her name and address
  • If you have any family member in the UK, provide his/her name, address, and passport number.
  • Medical certificate that shows your tuberculosis (TB) test if you’re visiting for more than 6 months.

2) UK Short-Term Study Visa Requirements (Visa to Study English)

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age: 16 years or more
  • You must be accepted onto an English language course (with 11 months or less duration) that includes no other subjects
  • Your course is with an accredited institution
  • Show proof that you have enough money to support yourself so you don’t need help from working or from public funds. Or show that relatives or friends can support and house you
  • You can pay for your return journey

Documents Required:

  • Must provide your current passport (having a blank page for your visa) or other valid travel document
  • Show evidence (like bank statements or payslips for the last 6 months) that you can support yourself during your trip 
  • Provide details of where you intend to stay and also show your travel plans 
    • Do not pay for accommodation or travel until you get your visa
  • Show evidence of course fee payment or have enough money to pay it later. 
  • You should also show your tuberculosis (TB) test results
  • If you’re under 18 years old, you must provide contact details of at least one parent or guardian in your home country
  • You should also provide a certified translation if any documents are not in English or Welsh.

3) UK Student Visa Requirements

English Language Requirements

It is essential to prove your knowledge of the English language when applying. It can be proved by

  • Passing the Secure English Language Test (SELT) (approved provider only)
  • Having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18

It is necessary to prove that you can read, write, speak and understand English to a certain level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale.

Degree level or above: Equivalent to CEFR level B2

Below degree level: CEFR level B1

Your Higher Education Provider (HEP) may assess the level of your English if you’re studying at a degree level or above. It means they may ask you to do a different test (equivalent to a CEFR level B2).

Requirements:

  • Must provide your current passport (having a blank page for your visa) or other valid travel document
  • The Confirmation Letter (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)) from your course provider
  • Proof of having enough money to support yourself and pay for your course (It varies depending on your circumstances)
  • If you’re under 18 show proof of parental or other legal guardian consent 
  • If you’re under 18 provide proof of your relationship to your parent or guardian 
  • Your tuberculosis (TB) test results
  • Show written consent for your application from your financial sponsor, if you received sponsorship for your course fee and living costs (in the last 12 months)

4) Child Student Visa UK Requirements

Documents Required

  • Must provide your current passport (having a blank page for your visa) or other valid travel document
  • The Confirmation Letter (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)) from your course provider
  • Provide written consent from your parent or legal guardian for your study in the UK
  • Show proof of your relationship to your parent or guardian (e.g. a birth certificate or other government-issued document showing their names)
  • Show proof of having enough money to support yourself and pay for your course (It varies depending on your circumstances)
  • Provide evidence of the qualifications you used / showed to get a place on your course (if required by your course provider)
  • Show your tuberculosis (TB) test results
  • It is essential to show written consent for your application from your financial sponsor (if you’ve received sponsorship for your course fees and living costs in the last 12 months)

UK Student Visa Fee from Pakistan

UK study visa fees vary depending upon various elements and the type of your visa. Here is the chart that shows the latest UK embassy fees for the student visa and other study visa types.

Bank Statement for UK Student Visa

The bank statement required for the student visa can vary depending upon various circumstances. It mainly depends upon your course fee and in which city you are going to study and stay. 

Example: If you are applying for the Student Visa (type), you need to show that you have enough money to pay for 1 academic year. The amount to be paid will be on your Acceptance Letter (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies / CAS). In addition to that, you will have to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself in the UK. 

  • £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London
  • £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London

In case you are boarding at a residential independent school, You will have to pay boarding fees instead. That amount will also be on your CAS.

Health Insurance for UK Student Visa

Health insurance is mandatory for students who want to study in the UK (except those who are going for less than 6 months of courses). The healthcare surcharge varies depending upon various elements like duration to stay and many more. For Short-Term Study Visa (Visa to Study English: up to 11 months), the healthcare surcharge is approximately £470 (Rs.120,000 approx.).

UK Visa Application Center Guidelines

You have to apply for the UK visa online and pay the fee online as well. Visit the GOV.UK  website for applying and paying fees. After that, you need to visit the VFS Global visa center. Before your visit, book an appointment with VFS Global online.

Appointment

You have to book an appointment as a part of your online application. 

When you reach at your appointment day and time, you’ll need to:

  • Provide proof of your identity with a passport or a travel document
  • Get your fingerprints and photograph (known as ‘biometric information) taken
  • Provide all the documents required to show you’re eligible for a Standard Visitor visa

*Your passport and documents may be kept at the visa application center while processing your application.

The following are some important guidelines for visiting the VFS Global center.

Guidelines

  • You need to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time
  • Must attend the appointment for your visa application yourself. 
  • It is essential to take your valid passport or travel document with at least one page that is blank on both sides.
  • You will need to submit your fingerprints and photograph (biometric information). A digital finger scanner collects images of all 10 digits, and you will have a digital photo taken. 
  • Your visa application will not be processed without biometric information.
  • To provide acceptable finger scans, make sure that your fingertips are free from any forms of decoration, cuts, abrasions or other markings.
  • Your digital photo will be taken with a full face and without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or head covering unless it is worn for religious or medical reasons.
  • Your child must attend an appointment and have their digital photograph taken if you are applying for a visa on behalf of a child under 5 years old. (fingerprint information is not necessary in this case).
  • Children under 16 years old need to be accompanied by an adult (18+) and this cannot be a member of VFS Global staff.
  • You can upload your documents yourself after booking your appointment, or bring your supporting documents and use our Document Scanning Assistance service at the Visa Application Center (fee applies).
  • If you have purchased, or plan to use our Document Scanning Assistance service, bring the originals or good-quality copies of your supporting documents to the Visa Application Center.

What to bring to the center?

  • A printout of the Appointment Confirmation letter confirming the details of your appointment (by VFS Global)
  • Valid passport or travel document (with at least 1 page blank on both sides)
  • Printout of your checklist (from your completed application on GOV.UK)
  • Supporting Documents 
    • You will need to bring them with you to the Visa Application Center if you have not uploaded your documents online. Please refer to UKVI guidelines as per your visa type to know which documents you must provide. 
    • The proper size of documents as per guidelines is essential. Sorting and separating the Documents according to the guidelines is also necessary to ensure swift processing at the Visa Application Center.

You may also need to bring

  • One recent photograph, according to UK Visas and Immigration guidelines if you are exempt from giving biometrics
  • Evidence of your sponsor’s leave to remain in the UK if you are applying as a dependant.
