International Auto Shows in the Age of Omicron: One Step Forward and Two Steps Back

Just when it had started to look better for the international auto industry, just when there was a glimmer of hope, bad news has struck again and it doesn’t augur well.

After a two-year, Covid induced hiatus, the Montreal International Auto Show, the Canadian International Auto Show and the Vancouver International Auto Show were scheduled to be held in January, February and March 2022 respectively. Now they’ve been postponed to 2023 due to Omicron.

The Canadian International Auto Show is the biggest event of its type in Canada, which has traditionally kicked started the new-car show calendar every year in Canada.

In a report, Deloitte, one of the biggest accounting firms in the world has revealed that Covid-19 affected the the international automobile industry:

  • By creating disruption in the Chinese auto parts industry, limiting exports
  • By disrupting auto manufacturing in Europe and the US

Covid-19 couldn’t have hit the international automotive industry at a worse time. When Covid started to affect the industry, the global automotive demand was already down.

The news from Canada doesn’t bode well for the automotive shows in the rest of the world. Organizers of all the mega automotive events had been gunning to get back with a bang in 2022. The cancellation of these auto shows in Canada has now left a huge question mark on:

  • Tokyo Motor Show
  • North American International Auto Show
  • Chicago Auto Show
  • Paris Motor Show
  • International Geneva Motor Show
  • Auto Shanghai
  • Frankfurt Motor Show
  • Many others

It’s bad news for the local motorheads too. These mega events are keenly watched by auto enthusiasts here, where the latest models of their favorite makes are revealed. Pictures and videos from these events alone are enough to make anyone fall in love with cars.

What do you make of this news? How would it affect the automotive industry here?
