Murree Braces for Winter Storm: How To Stay Safe

The Met Office has issued a heavy snowfall warning for Murree starting January 20 and lasting till January 25. This snowstorm has the potential of disrupting normal life for both locals and visitors and therefore both are being warned to take extra measures to stay safe. It is worth remembering that in January 2022, a freak snowstorm killed 23 in Murree. To avoid another such incident, Murree’s district administration has been put on high alert. No more than 8,000 vehicles will be allowed to enter the district.

Top Tips on How to Stay Safe During Snow Storm

The best tip to avoid an untoward situation is to stay at home and not travel to Murree and its adjacent areas. However, for whatever reason you can’t avoid visiting the popular hill station, make sure that you stay updated with the Met Office weather alerts, so you know the road conditions. You must have a hotel booking or a place to stay before you leave for Murree. However, even with a definite place to stay, carry the following items in your car to stay warm and safe.

  1. Wool blankets and comforters
  2. Sleeping bag
  3. Sweatshirts and sweatpants
  4. Mittens
  5. Mufflers
  6. Gloves
  7. Socks
  8. Non perishable healthy food items like chickpeas, dried fruits and water
  9. Snow chains

And no matter what you do, do not keep your car running in the snow even when you are awake. This can buildup Carbon Monoxide (CO) inside the cabin without you noticing it. CO is colorless and odorless. You can’t smell or see it. CO KILLS!

The abovementioned tips will come in very handy if you find yourself stranded in snow with nowhere to go.

Other Areas Likely to Get Snowfall

In addition to Murree, its adjoining areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are also likely to get snowfall during the same time period. Residents and visitors of Haveli, Poonch, Bagh, Neelum valley, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Shangla, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Kohistan, Swat, Dir, Kaghan, Naran, and Galiyat regions should be especially careful.

The above mentioned safety tips are applicable to those living and visiting these areas as well.
