Walking into a store and picking out a lipstick shade out of a sea of options can be confusing and sometimes, overwhelming. Pakistanis have a diverse range of skin tones. From fair to dusky to dark, complexions vary. What lip color may look good on a dusky complexion may not suit a fair-colored woman and vice versa.
In this blog, we will guide you on which lipstick shades are best for you according to your skin tone.
Determine Your Skin Tone
Knowing your complexion is important as it makes it easier to choose the right shade of lipstick for you. Wearing a lipstick shade which compliments your skin tone can give you an overall gorgeous look.
Skin tones are basically divided into 5 types:
- Fair
- Light
- Medium
- Tanned
- Deep/Dark
Let’s try to find out your skin tone.
1. Fair Skin Tone
Fair skin means a very light skin tone which appears slightly pinkish. It hardly ever tans but is more prone to sunburns than any other skin tone. For a fair complexion, the lip shades which will suit you best are light pinks, coral, peaches, nudes and dusty red.
2. Light Skin Tone
You can apply the same lip colors on a lighter skin tone as on a fair one. If you want to go for a brighter look, you can choose fuchsia pink and bright corals.
3. Medium Skin Tone
Medium skin tone means a wheatish or an olive complexion. This skin tone is most common among Pakistanis. Lipsticks with different shades of berry, cherry red and mauve would look great on women with medium-toned skin.
4. Tanned Skin Tone
Tanned skin tone means a light brown skin color. Lipstick shades like ruby, wine, deep pinks, brilliant reds and other similar shades would compliment your beautiful tanned skin tone.
5. Deep/Dark Skin Tone
Browns and different shades of purple like plum, caramel, wine and blue-based reds would compliment your pretty chocolate skin.
What is Your Undertone?
Looking out for undertones is another thing which can give you a clearer idea on what lip shade to choose. To check what undertone you have, you need to see the color of veins on your wrist.
1. Cool Undertone
If your veins appear to be blue or purple, it means your undertone is cool. Choose a lipstick with blue or purple hues for cool undertones. People with a fair or light complexion are more likely to have a cool undertone but it is not always true. People with medium skin tone may have cool undertones as well. Silver jewelry compliments this undertone.
2. Warm Undertone
Most medium skin-toned people will find their undertones to be yellow, peachy or green. If your veins show any of these hues, you have a warm undertone. For warm undertones, use lipsticks with red, orange or copper hues. Gold jewelry goes great with warm undertones.
3. Neutral Undertone
If you have trouble deciding whether your veins are green or blue, then you most likely have a neutral undertone. A wide range of lipstick colors would work for people with neutral undertones. Both gold and silver jewelry would look nice with them.
Eye Color
Your eye color can also help you choose the right lipstick shade. It will further help you decide which shade you can rock best. Applying the right shades of lipsticks would bring out your eyes and give you a vibrant look.
- Brown eyes: Bright reds, browns and light pinks
- Blue eyes: Different shades of cherry and scarlet colors
- Green eyes: Terracotta and pinks
- Gray eyes: Nude shades and plum colors
The Shape of Your Lips
Another thing to consider before putting on your lipstick is the size and shape of your lips. If you have plump lips, brighter and darker matte lipstick colors would look great on you. Try avoiding light and glossy shades on plump lips.
On the other hand, thin lips would rock lighter colors with a little gloss and sparkle. Flashy colors would make your lips appear even thinner so those should be avoided.
