The Future of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan: From 2021-2026

Though two successive governments have unveiled major roadmaps for the local auto industry – the Automotive Development Policy 2016-2021 and AIDEP 2021-26, the subsequent policy revisions have handicapped the arrival and manufacturing of EVs in the country. As a result, hybrid vehicles have further posted positive sales numbers; a rising petrol price has also helped.

Toyota Prius and Honda Vezel: The first hybrid wave

Prius a hatchback and Vezel a subcompact crossover SUV were introduced in the local market as CBUs at the time when motorists were looking for fuel efficient vehicles. Equipped with a traditional combustion engine and an electric battery pack, these two were offering unbelievable mileage per litre of gasoline.

The two main factors which made hybrids the preferred choice of many worldover, also attracted the local consumer:

  1. Fuel efficiency
  2. Clean energy

As Vezel and Prius have become popular, they have attracted other hybrids as well. This however does not mean Prius and Vezel have not been selling locally; in fact, they are still the hottest selling hybrids in Pakistan.
