Analysis
Suzuki Alto continues the winning streak as it is the winner of June 2022. Its total sales are 7,487 units, which is 37% more than last month and 516% more than last year (June 2021). The major reason behind this is worsening economic conditions in the country as people who were looking for Wagon R or Cultus last year are forced to buy Suzuki Alto due to the price hikes.
Toyota Yaris and Corolla (combined) have grabbed the 2nd position in terms of sales (4,453). Their rivals Honda City and Civic have obtained 3rd position with 3,421 units sold in June 2022. It is pertinent to mention that the sales of Honda sedans have increased by 28% and 21% as compared to May-2022 and June-2021 respectively. Whereas, the sales of Toyota sedans have increased 4% and 19% as compared to May 2022 and June-2021 respectively.
It shows that the sales of Honda cars are increasing and nearing Toyota. It might be a point of concern for Toyota because it has ruled over the sedan segment in Pakistan for a long time and this title might not remain with it if Honda cars continue to gain popularity like this.
Last month, there were speculations about Suzuki discontinuing Cultus. But how can the company do it as this hatchback is ranked 4th (2,468 units) in terms of units sold? It shows they were just rumors. Cultus has gained 94% more sales as compared to the previous month and 9% more sales as compared to last year.
Suzuki Wagon R might be ranked 5th (2,134 units) in terms of number of units sold. However, its sales dropped by -5% compared to last month. It might not bother the company as its sales have increased by 83% as compared to the previous year.
Final Verdict
The automobile industry has done pretty well as a whole. Total sales of cars, SUVs, and pickups increased by 54% in the period of July 2021 to June 2022. Total YOY sales are up by 106.4% and MOM sales are up by 24%. No one predicted this as the poor economic situation indicated a decline in sales. But the numbers show the opposite.
The main reason behind this increase could be the previous orders that might have been delivered or invoiced in June-2022. As there are signs of further car price hikes, people are buying them more to sell them later at higher prices.
As it becomes harder for a common man to buy a new car, many are forced to buy used cars as they can’t afford to buy a new one.
