Old vs. New Suzuki Swift: The Ultimate Comparison

Old vs. New Suzuki Swift: The Ultimate Comparison

Suzuki Swift launched its 2nd generation in 2010 in Pakistan. It was warmly welcomed due to its sporty and modern looks. Suzuki phased out this car in August 2021 for a variety of reasons, lousy fuel economy being one.

The company has re-entered the hatchback segment with the latest 4th generation Swift. It is worth reminding our readers that the company has skipped one generation (3rd gen) and has launched the latest 4th gen in the local market.

Suzuki in Pakistan has been notorious for offering the least in terms of comfort and safety features. Meanwhile, it never shies away from increasing the prices of its vehicles, many times a year. However, this may all change with introducing the all-new 4th generation Suzuki Swift 2022.

But how different is this new Swift? There is no telling unless compared with the old Swift (2nd generation).

So here it is, the comparison of Swift 2nd gen vs. 4th gen.

Exterior looks: Old vs New-gen Swift

Swift 2nd generation has bulky looks with a reclining roof making it look sportier. The car has a wide body and large 185/60/R15 tyres. Both of these increase the road grip and stability of the vehicle. There are no sharp curves and character lines. However, huge curved lights on the front and back add to the flashy look of this hatchback.

New Suzuki Swift refreshes the old design with more sharp, sublime and aggressive looks. The upswept front and backlight with honeycomb grille in the center look spectacular. Alloy rims are standard in all variants. The rims are now sporty and polished with a tyre size of 185/55/R16. The car’s rear is now more sloppy with a built-in spoiler and high-mounted brake lamps.

Which Swift generation has a better Interior

Old Swift was using the same interior for 12 years. There was no innovation whatsoever in terms of interior design. It comes equipped with a dual dashboard and one driver-side airbag only. The meter cluster is analog though it looks beautiful when illuminated. It houses all information like rpm, speedometer, fuel, and temperature gauge. The doors have a wooden texture where the power window controls rest. The overall quality of the interior is better than any other hatchback Suzuki offers locally.

New Suzuki Swift is a leap forward in terms of interior quality. Upon entering the car, the first thing you will notice is the presence of a sporty steering wheel, a large 9-inch multimedia screen, circular AC vents in the middle, and a superb dashboard styling. The interior is more spacious than before, with huge storage pockets. It’s safer too, with 2 airbags in the GL and GL CVT variants; however, in the top variant (GLX CVT), you’ll find 6 airbags. This variant also offers extra premium features like multimedia steering, push start button, cruise control, and more.

Engine and Performance: 2nd vs 4th gen Swift

Swift is known as a pocket rocket for a reason. This hatchback comes with a 1328cc DOHC 4 cylinder engine which produces 92 bhp and 114 Nm of torque. Just for comparison, Toyota Yaris, which is a sedan, produces 96 bhp for a much larger body. You cannot go wrong with the performance of the Swift. In fact, this has been one of the best selling points of this hatchback.

Suzuki Swift’s 4th generation is now a 1197cc DOHC 16 valve VVT engine producing 82hp and 113 Nm of torque. This light and compact K-series engine produced less friction while maximizing the car’s efficiency.

Which Swift has more Comfort and Handling

Swift comes with a much stiffer suspension, making it uncomfortable on bumpy roads. However, it feels smooth on urban roads. The car’s driving pleasure is superior to any other local hatchback in Pakistan.

The new generation Swift uses Mcpherson strut suspension in the front and twist-beam rear suspension. This type of suspension is usually comfortable, and we hope that Suzuki Swift will offer a comfortable and smooth ride. We can only comment about it once we have it running on the roads.

Swift 2nd gen vs. 4th gen: Fuel Average

Fuel economy is one of the biggest concerns in Pakistan. Big engine and top-notch performance come with a cost that usually comes out in the form of poor fuel efficiency. 2nd gen Swift delivers up to 11 km/L in the city and 14 km/L on the highway. If you push this hatchback to the limits, fuel mileage can go down to 8-9 km/L in the city.

The new Swift comes fitted with the K12M 1.2L engine which is more efficient. Internationally this engine delivers a fuel average of upto 20 km/L. However, due to local road and traffic conditions, we can expect it to deliver less than 20 km/L.

What do we have to say about the new Swift?

Suzuki Swift’s 4th generation is far superior in terms of design, comfort, engine performance, and features to the previous generation. However, it is more expensive though we believe this price difference is justified given what it offers. Given its price, the newbie competes with compact sedans like Honda City, Toyota Yaris, and Changan Alsvin. Time will tell how well this hatchback will be received in the market. Your opinion is precious to us, let us know your thoughts about the new Suzuki Swift in the comment section below.
