Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) just made it crystal clear: nope, letting your teenager take the wheel isn’t cool, and mom and dad better watch out. The message? Underage drivers are being pulled over, fined, and yes, their parents are next in line for legal trouble if words aren’t heeded.
Here’s a glimpse of the crackdown:
- In June alone (June 1–30), authorities slapped over 33,000 challans on underage drivers and filed 251 FIRs.
- If an underage kid is driving any vehicle, parents will be held responsible and accountable.
- From handheld officers to Safe City cameras, enforcement is happening in real time, no hiding on Lahore’s roads.
The CTO has doubled down: if you see a youngster riding/driving, wardens are authorized to act immediately. Safe City Command Centre staff will flag offenders instantly. Authorities have joined hands to stop underage driving.
A bit of context you shouldn’t skip
This isn’t a brand-new issue:
- In 2024, Punjab police reported 59 accidents involving underage drivers, resulting in 43 lives lost, 11 serious injuries, and 70 minor ones.
- A heartbreaking June incident in Shahdara saw a 13-year-old riding without a licence involved in a crash that killed one person and hurt three others.
So yes, this crackdown is long overdue.
Why parents should be paying attention?
The CTO’s warning isn’t just about hefty fines, it’s about legal accountability. If you’re thinking, “But my kid just wants to zip to tuition,” well… that’s exactly the loophole enforcement aims to close. No riding/driving till they’re legally eligible.
Bottom line: Lahore’s roads are now under even stricter watch. Underage driving isn’t just risky, it’s illegal, and you can get pulled into legal accountability. Parents: this one hits home, literally.
