Every year when tax season comes around, I hear the same question: “When’s the last date to file?” Honestly, I’ve asked that myself plenty of times. Filing returns feels like a chore, but it’s part of the system we all have to follow. Once you know the income tax filing deadline and the basics, it doesn’t seem as heavy as it first looks.
Income Tax Due Date
Every year FBR gives us a deadline to file returns. For most of us who are salaried, it usually lands around 30th September. Businesses and AOPs often get different dates. Personally, I always keep an eye on FBR’s updates because the deadline can even extend (not necessary).
Check out the deadline to file tax returns in Pakistan:

Tax period for Income Tax Return
Our tax year isn’t like the calendar year. It starts from 1st July and ends on 30th June. So whatever you earn or spend in that time counts in your return. Once June ends, I know it’s time to start collecting slips, statements, and documents before filing.
Why is it Important to File Your Tax Return on Time?
I’ve learned that filing on time saves a lot of trouble. You avoid penalties and get listed as an active filer. That simple step means less tax on banking, property, or even buying a car. For me, it also gives peace of mind knowing my record is clean.
Consequences of Late Filing or Non-Filing of Tax Returns
To be honest, not filing or even late filing only burns your pocket. FBR puts fines, and non-filers end up paying more on everyday transactions. I heard a news last year that FBR will block the sims of non-filers. I’ve seen people delay and then get stuck with notices or extra stress. Filing on time may feel like a hassle, but it actually saves money and headaches later.
Conclusion
In the end, filing on time saves money, stress, and a lot of back-and-forth. I’ve learned the hard way that delaying only makes things worse. If the date is close, don’t push it further, just get it done. It feels good to be clear and not worry about FBR chasing you later.
