The legendary Jatt of the Pakistani silver screen is back in The Legend of Maula Jatt after 43 years.
Maulay nu maula na maray, tay maula nai marda has proven to be a self fulfilling prophecy as the infamous duo of Jatt and Natt is still alive and kicking. And this time around they’re not only going to finish the unfinished business from the past but also help the flood affected Pakistanis.
The producers of this much-awaited movie have announced to donate a percentage of their first day preview show earnings towards flood affectees in Pakistan.
The Legend of Maula Jatt – Premiere
On Wednesday evening, October 12, the premier of this much-awaited movie was held at Lahore’s most chic cinema – CUE Cinemas. OLX Pakistan – an official partner of The Legend of Maula Jatt – was there to welcome and have a chit chat with the star studded cast of the movie.
A Film That Transcends Generations
Very few films are watched by two generations of the same family with the same fanfare; The Legend of Maula Jatt will be different. It will be watched by three generations with glee – grandparents, parents and children.
This is no exaggeration. Maula Jatt was released in 1979. So there’s a gap of at least 43 years between the two. Imagine a 30s something couple watching Maula Jatt in the late 70s or early 80s with their children. The same couple is now in its 70s. Their kids are now in their late 30s with their own kids. So, yes, this movie will be watched by three generations of Pakistanis.
Guess, the duel of Jatt and Natt never gets old.
Legacy
Maula Jatt was a super-successful commercial movie which celebrated its Diamond Jubilee at the box office. It has attained a cult status and given the star power of the likes of Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Hamza Ali Abbassi it is not hard to imagine The Legend of Maula Jatt doing any differently. Matter of fact, it will be the highest-grossing movie of all time in Pakistan.
Plot
Without giving anything away and just to jog your memory, the story of Maula Jatt was set in a village in Punjab where a reformed Maula (Sultan Rahi) who has renounced violence is in charge of keeping peace in his area till the Natt clan drags him into a never ending cycle of violence.
It reminds one of the famous dialogue from The Godfather: Part III where an exasperated Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) blurts out “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”
Punjab – a land of five fivers and holy men like Bullah Shah, Shah Hussain, Baba Fariq and Guru Nanak. A debate started post 1979. It centered around whether Maula Jatt promoted violence, a behavior supposedly alien to the land.
Whatever the merits of this never ending debate, The Legend of Maula Jatt makes violence its strength, not its Achilles Heel. You will have to see the movie to believe how beautifully such scenes are filmed, unlike in any other Pakistani movie. And what’s more – there are no fillers like the heroine dancing around the hero to gain his attention, dancing around the trees in rain, etc.
