ChatGPT - Global GPU Shortage Expected Soon?

The shortage of imported items in Pakistan isn’t over yet and there are reports of a global shortage of GPUs expected anytime near the future. And guess what, ChatGPT may become the reason behind this. Shocking news right? Well, it is reported by some of the most reputed media outlets as well as tech sites including Forbes and Techradar.

Continue reading to know how ChatGPT may cause this shortage.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a highly advanced AI language model designed to understand and generate human language. It uses advanced algorithms and natural language processing techniques to analyze and generate human language (responses).

The responses of ChatGPT are based on statistical probabilities calculated from the training data (through various sources). It continuously learns from new data and user interactions to provide helpful responses to users.

Situation

Before we understand the link between GPUs and ChatGPT, let’s see some important details. Do you know that ChatGPT’s large language model is built on 175 billion parameters? It is also a fact that it’s one of the largest and most powerful language models yet built. It is rumored that ChatGPT 4 is a big leap from ChatGPT 3 (current version) just like the 3rd version was from its predecessors (2nd version).

Now, let’s see the relation between GPU and this language model and how it will create a graphic card shortage.

As per a report, the current version of ChatGPT used 10,000 Nvidia GPUs just for training, with likely more to support actual queries. Due to AI’s popularity and usage, major companies including Microsoft and Google want to incorporate it into their services.

According to Forbes “Deploying current ChatGPT into every search done by Google would require 512,820 A100 HGX servers with a total of 4,102,568 A100 GPUs. The total cost of these servers and networking exceeds $100 billion of Capex alone, of which Nvidia would receive a large portion.”

These figures look scary because if Nvidia has to provide this many GPUs to Google, a global graphic card shortage can be expected. Although it is just a report with no official comments, many gamers will already be buying GPUs just to be on the safe side in case the reports become reality.

Unstable economic situation, increasing dollar rate, non-opening LCs, etc. have already increased the prices of imported items & may cause price hikes again. So, many local gamers may also be looking to buy GPUs due to these uncertainties.
