Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Tucson Made Killing Sales

There are a lot of different ways to interpret the latest car sales data released by Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA). One can argue that with mind boggling sales of Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Tucson, Pakistan’s auto industry is squarely resting on the shoulders of the upper and middle classes. Mind you, there is a price difference of more than Rs.5 million between the two.

The overall numbers are hopeful however. Those news outlets with access to both PAMA and non-PAMA statistics, are claiming that in the month of November 2022, a total of around 20,000 cars were sold, which is an increase of around 35% from the previous month. However, do not be overjoyed yet – some of these sales numbers include delivery of previously booked cars which have now been delivered thanks to availability of CKD kits in the country. 

Lets dig a bit deeper into the Y-O-Y and M-O-M sales numbers revealed by PAMA Car Sales Report (Nov 2022) of various car manufacturers and their models. 

Latest Sales Numbers

Let’s take a look at the sales numbers of various auto manufacturers, their popular models with their YOY and MOM sales.

Honda City and Civic (All Variants)

Is Honda Trying To Hide BR-V Numbers?

Honda has not been posting great BR-V sales numbers since August 2022, so it has coupled its sales figures with that of recently launched HR-V. Since these numbers are unlikely to portray a real picture of the sales of these two SUVs, we will not mention them in this blog. However, with the passage of time as HR-V sales numbers pick up, we will cover these numbers along with those of BR-V in our blog. 

Toyota Indus Sales Numbers

Indus Motor Company Limited (IMC) is the maker of some of the most popular cars in Pakistan, including Corolla, Yaris, Fortuner and Hilux.

Let’s take a look at their YOY and MOM sales numbers.

Pak Suzuki Sales Numbers

Suzuki is perhaps the most prominent brand in Pakistan with a variety of models and their variants. Suzuki’s Swift, Cultus, Wagon R, Alto and Bolan are the most commonly seen vehicles on the road. Let’s take a look at their YOY and MOM sales numbers.

Suzuki Wagon R

One of the most prominent and popular subcompact cars in Pakistan, Wagon R is the automobile behind the Uber/Careem revolution in Pakistan. Let’s look at its YOY and MOM sales numbers.

SUVs

Another automobile segment which has done really well in terms of sales is the compact SUV category. Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and MG ZS and HS are the front contenders in this segment. Unfortunately, PAMA has not provided sales numbers for Kia and MG; however, Hyundai Tucson sales numbers are available.

Sazgar Haval

Sazgar Haval sales numbers have also been revealed in the latest sales report. Though it is not clear whether the company is reporting sales of Haval H6 1.5T or Haval H6 2.0 4WD. It is unlikely that these numbers reflect the sales of newly launched, Pakistan’s first locally-assembled hybrid SUV, Haval H6 HEV. Irrespectively, the month-on-month sales figures are promising. In one month alone, there has been an increase of 77% sales for Haval vehicles (120 in October 2022 to 213 in November 2022).

The Biggest Winners

There are some clear winners here when we look at Y-O-Y and M-O-M sales.

• Hyundai Tucson
• Haval H6

The Biggest Losers

The three biggest auto assemblers in Pakistan, Toyota, Honda and Suzuki seem to enjoy unpredictable sales especially when you look at their various models.  

• Toyota Fortuner and Hilux
• Suzuki Wagon R

What to Expect in Future

For the past couple of months, it seemed doom and gloom for the local auto industry for a variety of reasons. However, with the latest PAMA Car Sales Report (Nov 2022) there seems to be a shift in the positive direction especially when we look at the M-O-M sales figures. While there are some vehicles in the list which have had negative Y-O-Y sales, their monthly sales figures are in the Green. Which augurs well for the industry in general, we hope.

This positivity is being attributed to greater availability of CKD kits in the country. It is worth reminding our readers that for sometime now the State Bank Of Pakistan has restricted the import of such items, leading to declining manufacturing in the country. So, if this provision continues, one can hope automobile sales will continue to go up.

The latest PAMA has put one fallacy to rest – that the demand for car sales has declined in the country. It is not so, as the latest statistics show. So, while the demand is there, the government should ensure timely import of parts, so the automobile industry can continue its upward trajectory.
