Every generation of mobile technology has played an important role in people’s lives either by connecting them with each other or by offering them enhanced and faster mobile services. Users always demand faster speeds to make internet browsing more accessible and convenient. As 5G in Pakistan is making its way, people are excited to see what new it has to offer them. In this blog, I will show you everything I know so far about fifth-generation technology, along with its pros and cons.
Understanding 5G
Wondering what 5G is? 5G, or fifth generation, is the latest technology that promises an improved user experience by offering 20 times faster delivery speeds, 10 times lower latency, and allowing 10 times more devices to connect per square kilometer as compared to the fourth generation (4G).
With all these advancements in technology, there are higher chances of advancements and progress in fields like IT, health care, transport, education, tourism businesses, marketing, etc.

Difference Between Previous Generations and 5G
The following table will help you understand how 5G is different from previous generations:
Launch | Main Purpose | Speed | Latency | |
1G | 1980s | Voice communication | 2.4 kbps | Very high |
2G | 1990s | Voice calls, SMS services | 50 kbps | (300–1000 milliseconds) High |
3G | 2000s | Introduced mobile data, video calls | 1.1 to 20Mbps | (100–500 milliseconds) Moderate |
4G | 2010 | High-speed browsing, wireless broadband | 1 Gbps | (< 100 milliseconds) Low |
5G | 2025 | Massive network capacity, increased bandwidth | 20 Gbps | (1 millisecond) Ultra-Low |
The Execution Plan of 5G in Pakistan
In 2019, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (2019) decided to perform 5G trials. This was done to understand the scope and function of fifth-generation technology in Pakistan. As a result, it was noticed that 5G is all set to deliver increased flexibility, capability, and reliability in the digital fields of Pakistan. Since then, they have been trying to work on a 5G launch in Pakistan to accommodate the users. Furthermore, PTA aims to provide a 5G network to 50% of the population in the first two years of implementation, initially launching in major cities.
On August 11, 2023, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication announced the launch of 5G in August 2024. Later, the launch was postponed to ensure the readiness of 5G services. After the continuous effort, PTA is expected to completely work on the 5G spectrum, launching it in April 2025.

Challenges Faced By 5G in Pakistan
There are multiple challenges faced by 5G technology in Pakistan. Some of them are mentioned below:
- The lack of compatible 5G devices in Pakistan.
- Less than 15% fiber-to-tower ratio.
- Lack of awareness and understanding of 5G application in healthcare, education, and financial sectors.
- Higher chances of disturbed 5G signals due to the usage of illegal signal boosters in many areas of Pakistan.
Pros and Cons of 5G
Pros | Cons |
Fast Speed helps in faster downloading, streaming gaming, etc. | Limited Coverage (lack of availability in rural locations) |
Low Latency Rate (1 millisecond with 5G) | Compatible Devices (requires expensive 5G compatible devices) |
Vast Capacity (handles an increased number of connected devices at the same time) |
Conclusion
To sum this up, 5G in Pakistan is a big thing as it helps improve user experience with advanced technology. The 5G is expected to boost digital connectivity and economic growth as compared to the previous generations launched in Pakistan. However, there is still a need to get people aware of how to use it properly and take advantage of fifth-generation technology.
