Let’s take a brief look at how this mega event started and some of its interesting facts.
Brief History & Interesting Facts
In 1983 the Asian Cricket Council was founded to promote goodwill between cricket playing Asian countries. The first Asia Cup was held the year after and Sharjah hosted it. The event was supposed to happen every two years; however, due to political tensions between India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, it has not been held on a biennial basis.
Initially played between India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Asia Cup has gone on to invite other cricket playing Asian countries like Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
India with seven titles under its belt is the most successful Asia Cup team ever, followed by Sri Lanka with five wins.
Did you know that this year’s Cup was supposed to be held in Pakistan? However, the Asian Cricket Council later changed the venue to Sri Lanka with Pakistan to host the Cup in 2023. The venue was further changed when Sri Lanka refused to hold the event due to its political condition. Sri Lanka is still the host but the venue has been shifted to UAE.

As always, there are two groups and interestingly, both Pakistan and India are in the same group this year.
