Nowadays, supposed quotes from the famous Persian poet and mystic Rumi are thrown left right and center. Believe it or not, Rumi said something about the carpets as well. “When someone beats a rug, the blows are not against the rug, but against the dust in it.”
Without philosophizing too much about it, cleaning carpets is a major hassle especially if you want to do it at home, by yourself and without the use of a carpet cleaner. It is easier to simply hire the services of a professional carpet cleaner, but then not everyone can afford them. Moreover, when there are ways to clean carpets yourself and that too without needing special and expensive items, why not do it and save some money in the process.
Here are 5 ways to get them clean yourself.
Vacuum
You might have guessed this one already. Those who already have a vacuum cleaner at home are aware of its usefulness. A vacuum cleaner can not only suck and remove dirt and debris from the surface of the carpet but also from deep in its fibers.
An effective technique in vacuuming is to start from the edges of the room, working your way inward. Vacuum in different directions and more than once on each section to pick up as much dirt and debris as possible.
Spot clean stains
A simple vacuum cleaner cannot remove stains. For that, you’ll have to spot clean the carpet. For that, you can use one of the following options:
- Dish wash soap – A dish wash liquid soap is a household item. Mix a few drops of it with warm water and apply the solution to the stain. Blot with a clean cloth and rinse with water.
- Club soda – Pour club soda directly onto the stain and wait for a few minutes before blotting with a clean cloth.
- Baking soda and vinegar – Mix equal parts baking soda and vinegar to create a paste. Apply the paste to the stain and wait for a few minutes before blotting with a clean cloth.
Deep clean with a carpet brush
This is a combination of the two above mentioned options. First, vacuum the carpet to remove any loose dirt and debris. Then, mix equal parts warm water and vinegar in a bucket. Dip the carpet brush into the solution and scrub the carpet in small sections, making sure to work the brush deep into the fibers. Once you’ve scrubbed the entire carpet, rinse with clean water and blot with a clean cloth to remove excess moisture. It will help with drying the carpet faster.
Steam clean with a steam mop
Steam mops are usually used by professional carpet cleaners and are not typically a household item. Nonetheless, they are an effective stain remover. Simply, fill the steam mop with water and run it over the carpet, targeting stains. The steam will help loosen dirt and debris, while the mop pads will absorb the moisture and dirt.
Make your own carpet cleaner
Making a carpet cleaner of your own is no rocket science. All you need is:
- Baking soda
- Vinegar, and
- Dish wash soap
Now, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of vinegar, and a few drops of dish wash soap in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray the solution onto the carpet. Let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with a carpet brush or mop. Rinse with clean water and blot with a clean cloth to remove excess moisture.
