NIO: A Chinese EV in Pakistan

NIO: A Chinese EV in Pakistan

Nio’s SUVs are amongst those which give Tesla Model Y a run for its money in China. So, any news about this auto manufacturer coming to Pakistan is bound to be noticed locally.

Nio: One of China’s Leading EV Manufacturers

Nio, a Shanghai-based leading EV manufacturer in China, is already planning to export EVs to Europe and the U.S.

Founded by William Li, who is also its CEO, Nio plans to mass produce EVs that will compete with Mercedes, BMW, Audi and others.

While the company plans to compete with premium European auto manufacturers, it aims to produce EVs much cheaper; however, Nio does not intend to manufacture Wuling Hongguang type EVs.

Nio plans to introduce three new EVs in 2022 with one of them being the cheapest of all Nio models. Perhaps this model, which remains unnamed, will be introduced in Pakistan.

In this space, we have discussed in detail how Pakistan is not yet ready for an “EV Revolution”.

This situation is further complicated by the latest mini budget passed by the Parliament, in which import duty on EVs will be increased to 17% from 5%. The government had initially decided to facilitate the import of such vehicles by slashing the import duty to 5%. However, in a policy reversal, the import duty has been jacked up to 17%.

Bottom line

Even if Nio sends its cheapest EV to Pakistan, it may not be the cheapest for the local consumer. Would this affect its sales here? Let us know in the space below.

  1. I agree that the EV resolution is a new feature in Pakistan as I drive NIO before in Europe but I don’t think it is suitable in Pakistan because of no electric charging plant facilities and also it is much costly to purchase here for the locals and if NIO wants to sell EV here so first it has to break the market womb of toyota and honda here for this they have to come up with some new motor import company rather than deewan and lucky

  2. EVs are climate-friendly and acceptable to use in Pakistan however the question mark is how can we use here with no awareness and no good infrastructure of charging? The high electricity charging of Pakistan is another issue.

  3. EV vehicles seams cool but its recharging is still a question mark.
If we say EV is environmental friendly then how about to source of electricity (Fossil fuel, Nuclear energy etc.) to charge EV, is it environmental friendly or not ?
Secondly, what is EV charging procedure ? As I know its still in evolution. And till now a commercial 400V charger takes about 30 Min. and a domestic 220V charger requires up to 8 Hrs. EV charging stations are not enough in Pakistan yet. What if you need to travel 800KM or more, in one go. Also remind all night long ques at CNG filling stations of Pakistan.
Price of increasing electricity cost in Pakistan is another matter.
In this scenario having a Hybrid Electric (EV, PHV) vehicle is batter option. Fossil fuel isnt avoided but its least. And idling stop is also a batter feature.
