Lahore Traffic Police unveiled stringent new regulations that will make the city roads safer through immediate arrests and registration of FIRs (First Information Reports) for major traffic offenses in place of conventional fines.
This move was taken in response to increasing complaints from citizens and the administration regarding rash driving, underage drivers, and an alarming surge of fatal road accidents. Officials have realized that punishments in the form of fines only (challans) were not enough as repeat offenders were still breakig traffic laws without fear of severe punishment.
As part of this new strategy, the Lahore Traffic Police is going after the following dangerous habits specifically:
Wrong-Way Driving: More than 500 individuals have already been arrested for traveling the wrong way. This is a crime which, most times, leads to major crashes and real traffic jams, putting everyone at risk on the road.
Overloaded Loader Rickshaws: Overloaded rickshaws, which are found overloaded beyond capacity, become a major threat, especially when heavy loads hinder the driver’s view. Offenders in this regard now face direct prosecution, including arrest.
Unregistered Vehicles: The police are intensifying inspections on unregistered motorbikes and other irregular motor vehicles, including motorbikes mounted on carts. These hitherto under-appreciated vehicles will now be subjected to rigid tracking, and operators will be met with immediate action if apprehended.
Driving Underage: The police are creating a new policy that would make parents legally liable if their underage sons or daughters are caught driving cars. Parents may face criminal charges as accessories, putting much higher stakes on families that allow underage driving.
Reckless and Aggressive Driving: Speeding, unsafe overtaking, road racing, and other aggressive driving will no longer merely earn drivers a warning or citation. Rather, offending drivers will be apprehended on the spot, charges filed immediately.
Let’s see how the public reacts to it but what else can police do if the fines aren’t enough. What are your thoughts on it? Share with us in the comment section below.
