The National Highways & Motorway Police has introduced some new measures to make motorways safer for the commuters. The timing of this couldn’t have been better as in August 2022 a horrific accident resulted in the deaths of 20 people traveling on Multan-Sukkur Motorway.
Proactive Rather Than Reactive
While the Motorway Police have always been famous for their vigilance and applying the law irrespective of the driver’s status, they are getting even more strict.
Now rash drivers will be chased and heavily fined. And they will not be able to exit unless they have paid their challan. The same goes for other violters who have been challaned.
The Motorway Police will now have their spotters actively look for over-speeding and under-speeding drivers (under-speeding can kill too) and those who are using mobile phones while driving. These spotters will have the latest HD cameras. They will take the driver’s picture along with his/her car’s number plate’s picture as evidence.
Through this, the Motorway Police will ensure the application of National Highways rules.
Variable Message Sign (VMS)
Some police cars have the VMS system installed in them in which their rear screen windows will display the following messages in front of a violating driver:
- You’re in the wrong lane
- You’re overspeeding
- You need to pull over, etc.
Driver’s License Point System
As is the practice in many Western and other postmodern societies, if a driver gets caught violating a traffic rule, he/she gets a ticket which means deduction of a certain number of points from his/her license. Once the driver crosses a specific number in a year, his/her license is suspended or cancelled. The same will be applied here on the national highways and the motorways. However, the Motorway Police hasn’t revealed what that number is and the corresponding points for a particular violation.
These are indeed commendable steps and should go a long way in making the National Highways safer for every driver. However, it cannot be stressed enough that it is primarily the responsibility of every driver to obey all traffic rules while driving on the National Highways. This will ensure their safety, the safety of their passengers and others on the road.
