The following is how you can ride a motorcycle for the first time:

Learn The Controls

Driving a motorcycle is going to be completely different from a car. This is why, the first step you need to take before riding a motorcycle is to understand its functionality and controls. Driving a motorcycle requires quick action instead of thinking about what to do. Therefore, make sure you are aware of all the controls already.

Understanding the Brakes, Clutch, Gear and Throttle

Brakes: the motorcycle has front and rear brakes. Sounds a little tricky, right? The front brake is at the right side of the handle and when squeezed generates 70% of the stopping power. On the other hand, the rear brake is a lever on the right side of the bike with your food.

Clutch: The clutch is located at the left side of the handle and needs to be treated gently. It is used to disengage the engine when shifting gears.

Gear: The gear lever is located at the left foot and is shifted while pulling the clutch completely.

Throttle: It is the rotating module at the right side of the handle that controls the speed by controlling the supply of fuel and air to the engine. The throttle is rotated inwards to accelerate the motorcycle.

Now that we have explored all the controls, always remember the rule that the left side of the motorcycle controls the gears whereas the right side controls acceleration and brakes.

Sit on the Motorcycle and Practice Balance

Now that you have a complete understanding of the bike controls, the next important step is practicing balance. As motorcycles are heavy you need to have an idea of balancing them. When you are sitting, make sure you have easy access to the handles and your feet easily reach the levers. This is not just it, balancing the motorcycle is also important when you are taking a turn. It might sound like a daunting task but once you know the balance it gets easier.

Start the Motorcycle

The next step is to start the motorcycle. The following is how you can do so:

  1. The first thing you need to consider is that the bike must be on neutral which means it should be out of gear.
  2. Now start ignition by turning the key to the ON position.
  3. Lift the side stand of the motorcycle.
  4. In the case of the electric starter, you just have to press the starter button and the engine starts.
  5. To kick start a motorcycle, pull out the kick starter lever and push it down until the motorcycle starts. You might have to do it multiple times to start it.

Ride Your Motorcycle

After turning it on, the next step is to know how to change the gears and be right on time when applying brakes.

  1. Hold the clutch completely.
  2. To apply first gear you need to lower down the gear pedal. Once you know the pedal cannot go down anymore, the first gear is applied.
  3. Now slowly lose the clutch and the bike will start moving.
  4. Move the throttle slightly to accelerate.
  5. Now if you want to shift the gear, hold on to the clutch. Shift to the second gear and slightly lose the clutch.
