How Has Education Evolved From Traditional to Modern Learning?

With the fast-paced technological world, where everything is now going digital, the education sector also plays an important role. In the traditional classroom setups where students and teachers are physically present, the educational realm experienced a major shift and went digital. And yes! It got a big boost during the COVID-19 times.

This World Education Day, let’s have a quick look at what traditional vs modern learning has to offer us.

What is Online Education?

If you ask me to explain online education in one word, it would be evolution for me. Yes! Online education is one of the greatest evolutions in this modern world. It simply refers to the educational system that involves electronic gadgets such as mobile phones or laptops to acquire knowledge.

Now this means two things. First, with the help of devices, you take online lectures via different platforms, and secondly, you research and gain knowledge from different sources, such as online books, articles, and more.

Advantages of Online Learning

The following are the advantages of online learning:

Easy Access at Any Time and Place

It is one of the convenient ways where students from anywhere in the world can easily connect. Whether your classes are in another city or country, easy access via your devices can make you attend the lecture. In simple terms, students are no longer restricted by geographical boundaries and location to gain knowledge.

Affordability

Compared to traditional learning, online education can be an affordable option as it eliminates travel expenses, meals, and a hostel. Furthermore, the course material available online benefits the ecosystem as well, which involves paperless learning. However, know that it also varies depending on the course you opt for.

Learning Beyond Textbooks

Teachers can find expert ways to introduce ways for students learn. For instance, online learning can also be based on different podcasts, videos, pictorial representations, and more. This will not only help students learn but also capture their attention and keep them engaged. In short, online education is all about versatile learning.

More Balanced Life

Students who are part of online learning do not necessarily have to quit everything for their education. As it is not geographically bounded, it allows freedom to perform other important activities as well. For instance, a student running a business side-by-side can have access to online classes and learning material without having to compromise on the business-related tasks. Not just students, but this situation also applies to the teachers as well.

Disadvantages of Online Learning

The following are the disadvantages of online learning:

Less Student Teacher Interaction

Unlike traditional learning, online learning compromises the direct student-teacher interaction. This does not allow the teachers to individually assess the students’ performance. But less face-to-face interaction does not mean limited knowledge.

Furthermore, sometimes the students may participate in the online classes just for the sake of showing presence. This lack of interaction can make students hesitate to ask valid questions for fear of being judged, as they are unfamiliar with their teachers.

More Screen Time, More Distractions

Students may get easily distracted while using screens due to the accessibility of social media on devices. Imagine you are taking an online class, and you get a notification that your friend just posted something. Wouldn’t you directly click on it to see what it is?

That is exactly what I am talking about. It is easier to get distracted from lectures while you are on screens.

Solution? Try staying focused on the lecture and make sure you put your device on Do Not Disturb mode; it might help a little.

Dependency on Technology

Edtech is a popular term these days, which means technology incorporated in education. To some extent, it offers multiple benefits, but what about those with limited technological resources? People in rural areas may experience difficulty due to the lack of proper internet connectivity and other resources. Hence, the dependency on technology is a big issue for online education.

What is Traditional Learning?

Unlike modern learning, face-to-face education is a traditional way of learning that allows direct interaction between students and teachers. These can be regular course classes in school, university, or tuition centers. In short, the traditional education system demands the physical presence of both teachers and students.

Advantages of Traditional Learning

The following are the advantages of traditional learning:

Direct Student Teacher Interaction

Being physically available in the class boosts the direct interaction between the instructor and students. This way, a student’s individual growth is assessed and allowed to communicate with other students.

Less Distractions and More Discipline

The traditional education is more disciplined, where students are only focused on the lecture. This enhances the concentration level and determination. Furthermore, this allows students to participate and be more productive.

Focus on Foundational Skills

The foundational skills, such as communication, public speaking, time management, and developing discipline, are more focused during the traditional learning system. It also allows students to respect other’s opinion and participate in healthy debates by direct communication.

Disadvantages of Traditional Learning

The following are the disadvantages of traditional learning:

Rigid Schedule

Unlike modern learning, traditional education is solely time and place-dependent. It follows a rigid pattern and structure that the students are bound to follow.

Extra Expenses

Other than the expense of courses or classes, there are some other expenses that you will have to bear. For instance, the travel expenses from your home to your institute, meal expenses, and more.

Conclusion

No doubt, the world has progressed, incorporating multiple new technologies in recent times, and utilising them would not harm. But know that it completely depends on your choices and the availability of resources.

On this World Education Day, it is a reminder for us that education comes in different forms but with the same aim that is gaining knowledge. From chalkboards to screens, the education system has experienced evolution over time.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

~ Nelson Mandela
