Vehicles To Meet 57 New Safety Standards 

Previously, the Government of Pakistan took an initiative against the accidental and faulty cars. A 40% tariff was introduced on the import of used cars and banned vehicles older than 6 to 7 years. The purpose behind this initiative is to promote road safety. However, recently, the new car safety standards introduced in Pakistan under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. Let’s explore further in the blog. 

New Car Safety Standards in Pakistan

Starting from October 1, 2025, all vehicles, whether locally manufactured or not, will be required to meet the safety standards. Currently, only 17 safety standards are available in cars, which will be upgraded to 57 from next month. 

The Motor Vehicle Industry Development Bill 2025 is mandatory for all vehicles; otherwise, heavy penalties will be imposed. Besides the safety standards, the bill also impacts the import of vehicles in the country, and more is mentioned below: 

  • Import of accidental type D vehicles will be banned. 
  • Unverified vehicles with no proper licensing will not be imported. 
  • A license is required for locally manufactured vehicles from the headquarters. 
  • Vehicles with no chassis or engine numbers will not be allowed to be imported. 

Penalties For Companies That Fail To Meet Safety Standards

Companies that fail to comply with the safety standards proposed by the Motor Vehicle Industry Development Bill 2025 will experience heavy penalties. The penalties include up to two years of imprisonment with a heavy fine of Rs. 1 million. However, if the company continues to meet the requirements, it is likely to experience punishment up to three years in jail and an increased fine of up to Rs. 5 million.

To sum up, the government continues its efforts for road safety. The recent initiative includes the 57 new car safety standards introduced in Pakistan. However, companies that fail to meet these requirements will experience heavy fines.
