How to Nail That Difficult Question in A Job Interview
The question “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” can be a very daunting one. This is difficult to answer as it feels like a trick question! You definitely do not want to say “In your position!” to the person hiring you.
So, how should you answer the question?
First, understand why a manager wants to know where you see yourself in 5 years. There are lots of candidates, with impressive resumes, skills and degrees in the job market. You are one, of many, prospective employees. The company hiring you wants to know what makes you stand out as an employee.Interviewers usually have years of knowledge and experience.
Ask yourself how this particular role, job and organization align with your goals, ambition, career and progress. You should try to be as honest as possible, when answering this particular question. So, for example, if you’re a writer who just got called in for an interview, you could say, “I’m excited to take on responsibilities that would enable me to hone and grow my skills, as a writer. Exposure and experience, such as those that I’ll get to enjoy at this company, will help me in my future endeavours and enable me to fulfil my dream of becoming a great writer.”
However, if you aren’t very certain about the answer, don’t be afraid of expressing such concerns. You could always say you aren’t very sure of what the future holds for you but you are certain working at the company will give you the experience you need, to make a decision.
There is no one, correct, way of answering this question. So, it all depends on your confidence and the expertise that your interviewer is in search of.
